Sidney Balick

Sid became a member of the Delaware Bar in 1956 and founded his own law firm that same year. Now of emeritus status to the firm, Sid’s leadership and mentoring continue to serve the members and clients of Balick & Balick.

Within one year of his admission to the Bar, Sid became Delaware’s first Family Court Master, serving from 1957 to 1960. From 1960 to 1966, he was attorney for the State Senate. In 1963, he was appointed by Governor Tribbitt to serve on the State Board of Corrections and then in 1970, he was elected to the Delaware House of Representatives for the First Representative District.

He has devoted his career to representing people most in need of access to the courts but least able to afford it. For over 50 years Sid has represented individuals charged with crimes, claimants injured on the job and individuals injured by the acts of others. He has broken new legal ground in many of his cases, often creating a right to recover where one previously did not exist. It has been said that no other lawyer in Delaware has secured more Delaware Supreme Court reversals.

During his distinguished career, Sid has frequently been recognized for his competence and unique approach to the practice of law. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has been named as one of the Best Lawyers in America since that periodical has been in publication. He also received the very prestigious Delaware Bar Association Distinguished Service Award, among many other honors given in his field.

Sid has been a passionate volunteer for the Delaware State Bar Association throughout his career, having served on the Delaware State Bar Association Professional Guidance Committee from 1974 to the present. This committee is comprised of Delaware attorneys who volunteer to assist other attorneys in need.

Throughout his career as a practicing attorney, Sid has assisted the Bench in a number of capacities. From 1986 through 1993, he served on the Delaware Supreme Court Board on Professional Responsibility. He has served on several committees at the request of the Courts, including the Delaware Supreme Court’s Long Range Court Planning Committee. He has acted as a friend of the court, representing lawyers brought before the Supreme Court on disciplinary matters and representing individuals requiring court-appointed counsel. He has served on the Criminal Justice Act Blue Ribbon Panel, representing indigent criminal defendants in federal court since its inception in 1990.

Sid has always made time for community service. He is the longest serving board member of the Boys and Girls of Clubs of Delaware. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Association of Northern Delaware, the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association, among others.
